What is a thrum cap?

A thrum cap is a type of knit hat covered with many small lengths of wool called “thrums”, most notably worn by sailors in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were also sometimes worn by associated trades such as fishmongers and dockworkers. Thrum caps came in many shapes and colors, and the thrums were believed to provide extra warmth and shed water like a thatched roof.
